Working on a change out. 3.5 ton 13.00 SEER, heat & cool, gas upflow furnace in hall way closet. Ruud equipment. R-22. Refrigerant lines running through attic.

I have learned to place TXV sensing bulb preferably in the horizontal position, and to not place bulb on a trap area of suction line.
If not in a horizontal position, in a vertical position with capillaries on top.

The evaporator coil paperwork says IMPORTANT to place bulb in horizontal position at 10 or 2 o'clock positions. but in this case it is going to be mounted at a trap area of the suction line. Any opinions?

45° @ bottom, no exceptions.

There are always exceptions. Most important is a good thermal contact. Capillary out the top preferred on vertical lines, but will work the other way. Yes, 4 O'Clock horizontal position is preferred.

Having no replies this morning, I went ahead and followed installation instructions, and put the sensing bulb at 10 o'clock position with good thermal contact, and horizontal position.

As to the horizontal portion of the suction line, I gave it 8 to 10 inches before going up into attic. So I don't know if that is still considered a trap.

System working fine after checking and following equipment charging chart.

Thank ya'll for your input!

ServiceF1rst, Where can I find that info as to allways 45 degrees @ bottom? Also, is it not best to follow equipment instructions first? If none then follow a preffered application?

You got me motivated to maybe learn something here. Very Happy

Freon's correct there are generally exceptions to every rule. I was taught 45 from bottom, I teach my techs 45 from bottom, and that's just the way it is. I suppose exceptions are subjective to how flexible one is willing to be.

I put this thread: http://hvacprotech.forumwise.com/hvacprotech-post-24273.html#24273 up for you. Important enough to get it from the horses mouth so to speak. If we don't have a copy of this file in the Archives, I'll get one up - after yesterday I'm afraid to say it isn't there, because I will be wrong sure as hell. Very Happy
